As you prepare your files and documentation for this tax season, it’s important you provide all of the required information to your Perlson LLP tax preparer to ensure your return’s accuracy. And unfortunately, this year has a wrinkle that some Perlson LLP clients should consider.

Any taxpayer who received New York State unemployment benefits in 2020 will NOT receive tax Form 1099-G in the mail. However, the form, which supplies information on the unemployment benefits you received last year from the New York StateDepartment of Labor, will still be needed to accurately file this year’s tax returns.

Moreover, the New York State Department of Labor does not allow for Perlson LLP or any tax preparer to download your Form 1099-G on your behalf. Therefore, we will be relying on you to supply the form if you received unemployment benefits in 2020.

It’s also worth noting that while Form 1099-G is most often used for unemployment benefits, you may have also received it if you received any of the following in 2020:

This form covers the following taxable assistance programs:

  • Unemployment Insurance;
  • Pandemic Unemployment Assistance;
  • Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation;
  • Extended Benefits (EB);
  • Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC);
  • Lost Wages Assistance (LWA).

If you’ve received any of the aforementioned benefits, please download Form 1099-G and provide it to your Perlson LLP professional assoon as possible. To obtain your Form 1099-G, follow these directions:
